According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention, half of U.S. travelers heading to another country will experience some kind of health problem. And, as medical costs grow and quality of care fluctuates depending on where you are, it's always smart to have a travel health insurance policy when you go on vacation or travel for business.
Don't be surprised if your regular medical insurance doesn't cover you abroad; medical evacuation and an air ambulance can cost over $90,000, and other drastic emergencies are just as costly. For this reason, most domestic insurance companies don't like to offer travel health insurance. You're not even covered on cruise liners, since often they're moving through international waters.
When shopping for travel insurance, be sure to shop around and compare both plans and rates. Many companies will offer similar plans at competitive rates, and by shopping around you'll get the best possible price for your coverage. You can also get a good price on a year-long policy if you travel often, or negotiate costs for a shorter trip based on your needs.
And don't forget to compare the types of coverage either - some travel health insurance policies will cover expenses if you get sick and can't make your trip, and others won't. Some policies cover all accidents and illnesses, while others will only cover major medical emergencies.
Regardless, it's always best to purchase travel insurance when you leave the U.S., and the extra cost is well worth knowing that should something happen to you when you're far from home, you'll still receive the best medical treatment available.
