California Health Insurance Law Extends More Health Coverage To Kids
|
|
The first of the year is almost upon us, and with it comes the new California health insurance law titled AB 2244.
AB 2244 will extend health coverage to around 1.5 million children currently without insurance in the state. The law limits the health insurance premiums for pre-existing conditions to no more than twice the rate for healthy kids.
For many parents who don't get coverage from their employer California health insurance was out of reach because their child had a pre-existing condition. A pre-existing condition can be as serious as a heart defect, or as minimal as an ear infection, based on the decisions made by the insurance companies.
For those children who did qualify for California health insurance with a pre-existing condition costs could be steep.
Originally the state's major health insurance agencies, including Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross and Cigna, had stopped offering child-only policies because of the law. However, according to the Independent Voter Network these insurers reinstated children's health coverage because the feared that "they will lose customers to the state's insurance exchange once it is up and running in 2014."
This is also good news for the state's budget, since the children that can now be covered by their parents won't be relying on the state for health coverage.
California health insurance will theoretically become more affordable for all state citizens in 2014 when the state run insurance exchanges offer coverage at lower prices. However, this is dependent upon whether or not the healthcare bill is overturned before this time.
