Affordable Health Insurance Plan Gaining Momentum in Washington

While Congress can't seem to get enough approval for a "public plan" in their health care legislation, Washington state has made an interesting move towards offering a similar type of affordable health insurance plan to all state citizens.

Well, affordable so long as you don't have as many health care needs as is currently covered by law.

According to the Puget Sound Business Journal, Washington state health care legislation is moving towards a plan that would look remarkably like the public option that's been abandoned in Congress.

And with a general lack of affordable health insurance impacting the whole country, such a move is attracting a lot of attention.

Washington's Health Care Authority plans to ask health insurance companies to help it create a medical coverage option that anyone could buy for $100 per month.

The only catch is that it likely won't offer the kinds of things that are currently required by law to be covered by health insurance.

Maximum annual coverage of $75,000 is one part of the plan, as well as deductibles of up to $5,000.

While opponents argue that such a plan wouldn't offer enough coverage for those who need it, supporters are using it to woo the "young invincibles," that crowd of state citizens who are young and healthy and therefore don't purchase medical coverage until it's too late.

With so many uninsured Americans, any attempt to provide affordable health insurance looks better than nothing, but whether or not people will want to purchase this plan is something we'll have to wait to see.
