Group Health Insurance Mandate for Employers Likely to be Dropped from Legislation
Among the many provisions attached to current health care legislation, the potential for a mandate requiring employers to provide some type of group health insurance to employees may soon be dropped.
According to ABC News, several proposals for the health overhaul bill may disappear, as Democrats work to attain enough votes to pass the bill up to the President's desk.
The potential mandated group health insurance was opposed by many out of fear that it would hamper economic development just when America needs it most.
Other proposals that may be dropped include the income tax increase on high-wage earners. In its place negotiators are thinking of extendingthe Medicare payroll tax to make up the difference.
While group health insurance rates are usually much more affordable for workers, large employers end up paying the bulk of the coverage.
However, a mandate requiring that all citizens purchase their own coverage still appears to be unopposed in current versions of the bill.
