It's hard to get through the day without hearing something on the news about health insurance, and it's even harder to imagine that not that long ago, our current level of health insurance was non-existent. So, how did it all begin? There were many important factors including medical technology, hospitals, physicians and government policy culminating in the development of health insurance.
Before the 1920s, little could be done for many patients, and most patients were treated in their homes. Hospitals didn't exist until after the turn of the century when antiseptic methods were regularly used. Even then, surgery was usually performed at home until the 1920s.
Medical Technology Milestones
1850-1870: Louis Pasteur, Joseph Lister and others study bacteriology, antisepsis and immunology.
1887: Various infectious agents are identified including typhus and malaria.
1887: SSK von Bash invents an instrument to measure blood pressure
1895: Wilhelm Roentgen invents X-rays.
1910: Drug treatment for Syphilis invented.
1920-1946: Large scale product of penicillin begins.
1955: Vaccine for polio.
