An alarming new survey reveals that more than 1 in 10 American's are living without health insurance, a January, 2005 WebMD Medical News reports. That includes private health plans, Medicare, and Medicaid, says the Gallup polling company who conducted two health insurance surveys in 2003 and 2004.
The results were compiled from more than 3,000 adults. Gallup also went a little further in details, such as age, race, gender and health status.
Age: Health insurance was the worst among young adults. Of participants aged 18-29, 17% said they had no health insurance. The older generation fared better. Less than 1% of those 65 or older said they had no insurance.
Race: More whites than blacks had private health insurance (64% vs. 45%). Medicaid or Medicare was more common among blacks than whites (44% vs. 26%)
Gender: More men than women had private health insurance (64% vs. 59%). More women than men used Medicaid or Medicare (32% vs. 24%).
Health Status: 21% said that had a disability and 31% cited a long-term medical condition. More than half of the disable participants relied on Medicaid or Medicare. A third relied on private health insurance, and 10% had no coverage at all.
