Individual Health Insurance Plans

If you're shopping around and comparing individual health insurance plans, it might seem easy to get confused. After all, there are so many factors to keep track of, and so much fine print to read, many people never really understand what is and isn't covered by their policy.

But all individual health insurance plans should offer similar terms and conditions. By knowing what these are, and what you need to protect your own health, you'll be better able to choose the best coverage for you.

First, be prepared that in most cases individual health insurance plans are more expensive than employer based group plans. However, they should also be more variable and have options for you to choose from.

This means keep an eye out for insurance agencies who will allow you to pick and choose the kind of coverage you want and can afford to pay for.

Next, make sure you understand what is and isn't covered under each policy, and what that will cost you. This should include deductibles, monthly premiums, costs for co-pays, medications, and emergency room visits.

If you're young, healthy, and don't go to the doctor more than once a year, an individual health insurance plan with a higher deductible might be right for you.

However, if you're older or need more support from a doctor or medical professional, it makes sense to have a lower deductible and higher payments.

And of course, women who are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, and children of all ages, need as much coverage as you can afford.

Finally, be sure to shop around and get as many insurance quotes as you can. Many agencies will offer similar services at different rates, and you're more likely to get a good deal if the agent you talk to knows that you're comparing rates from the competition!
